aagu — to become, and the future that hides in it

Kannada has three be-words: iru, aagu and aagiru. This lesson takes aagu, because it is the one that carries 'will be' and 'becomes'.

Draft — these 12 phrases still need a native-speaker check before they count as correct.

by the end you can

  • Say that something will be or will happen, using aagatte.
  • Say what you or someone else will become.
  • Recognise aagtiini, aagtiiya, aagtaane as the future of aagu.

This lesson is built from the course outline, not from a grammar book: every phrase below is one the operator’s own syllabus teaches at this point.

The one pattern

aagu = to become. Drop the -u and add the person ending: aag-tiini (I will become), aag-tiiya (you will), aag-taane (he will), aag-taaLe (she will), aag-atte (it will be / there will be). The ‘it’ form aagatte is the one you will use most, because it also means ‘there will be’.

How to practise

Say each card out loud in Kannada before you look at the meaning, then check yourself against the English. The practice deck for this lesson builds itself from these 12 cards.
